Hey everyone,
I love browsing through the sumo and sumo-memes subreddits. And the other day I saw a video that I thought was really neat, which also connected with a comment someone had left on a previous sumo post I did on Bloody Elbow.
The video is a compilation of Kyokudozan getting wins through extremely powerful and well timed palm strikes, some of which knock his opponents down/out.
Recently, I had a comment on BE remark that they wish there was a form of sumo with strikes, a ‘combat sumo’ if you will. This commentor, who is someone I quite like, thinks like many others do; that sumo is not a violent full-contact combat sport.
When I saw this Kyokudozan video, I decided to write a post on it and also give some context about striking rules and technique in sumo. In the post I discuss the techniques of Tamawashi, Abi and Takakeisho (and include a gif of Keisho’s brawl with Wakamotoharu from the last basho).
There’s also some context about Kyokudozan (one of the lightest wrestlers to ever compete in makuuchi).
Check it out here! (link).
Take care all!
PS. Working on the report card for komusubi and sekiwake, hope to drop that sometime this week.
