We are off, friends. The 2023 Nagoya basho is underway and I have posted my first round of results, highlights and analysis on BloodyElbow.com. You can read that here (link).
A few days ago we learned that Takakeisho would not be competing in this tournament due to the knee injuries that have heavily hampered his performance in the past two tournaments. Sadly, we had another injury pull out on Day 1.
Losing those two competitors is a real shame, but there are still plenty of exciting rikishi, with great storylines, we can follow along with.
Some great matches this day, featuring the usual suspects. We also got to see the makuuchi debut of Hakuoho (and Gonoyama, too — don’t forget him!).
Hope you enjoyed the bouts! Catch you tomorrow.
Bonus gif today is Takakeisho in the July tournament, storming through Ura. Ura tried to bounce off of the Angry Hamster and reset along the edge of the ring. But Takakeisho’s foot-speed allowed him to close the gap, sqaure up and drive Ura out.
